Lazy breakfast & Yesterday’s long run

Good morning, my beautiful little blog family! Today I woke up at 6:00AM for no reason other than my body just felt like it was time to wake up. I love mornings like that! Waking up early and before my alarm. Too bad I forgot I had planned a quick fasted cardio session for this morning and had a small pre-breakfast breakfast, haha. Oh well, I’ll try again tomorrow. It’s not like I’m going to do a 60 min run for fasted cardio or anything close to that, I was just thinking walking fast for 15-20 minutes on the treadmill. Right now I am eating my breakfast (Cheerios, strawberries, almond milk) while watching Teen Mom OG and blogging.

Yesterday my mom and I went for one of our first seriously long long-runs for this season of marathon training. We took the old railroad trail path all the way to the city, then intead of going towards the centre of the city we ran down to the river and followed a path that I have never seen before (or at least not that I remember) back out of the city. It was really beautiful there and I wish I had known about it sooner! And the sunshine made it even nicer. It’s always fun for me to run new places! When the trail by the river ended we ran through the timber terminal and back on to the regular route through a little neighborhood. After that it was all hills, hills, hills! I am not a fan of hills, but I know that makes it even more important for me to run them! After what felt like an hour we had climbed all the way up to the parking at the end of the old railroad trail path (opposite side from where we started our run). From here it’s approximately 4 km left home, which isn’t too bad, right? Well, my body was done. Done! As much as my brain wanted to move forward my body did not want to follow. Sure, it went forward, but I’m sure if you were sitting on a bench looking at us you’d think you were having a stroke because I looked like I was running in slow motion. Thankfully my mom was there to hold my hand – and I mean literally hold my hand, I was able to speed up a little bit when I held on to her hand and she sort of controlled the speed level. I was so happy when the run was over, not only because my body really didn’t feel like working anymore but also because I always feel really happy after a long run! 20,12 km including hills.

Today I’m not sure whether I want to go for a short run or just go for a walk before work. Right now it all depends on the weather, yes, it’s one of those days. Honestly, it’s probably more just me being lazy and not wanting to do anything at the moment. But I know once I head out I’ll ask myself why I ever even hesitated. I should also probably finish throwing away things and clean my room, I haven’t blogged about it but for the last month or so I’ve been on a mission to declutter my room and it is starting to look really nice. Or.. at least something close to nice, haha! And all of the sudden I had a bunch of things to do before work! I should probably get started!

List of the week, Walking with Mari & Crampy runs.

I said I would post my little week plan with daily do’s and week goals on Monday. That was yesterday and I didn’t post anything. And it wasn’t because I forgot to, it was simply because I was too lazy to make the list between working out, hanging out with Mari, work, and cooking/eating. I honestly wasn’t too sure what plans/goals I would set for this week, but I do feel like I was able to make a decent list.
Daily do's & Week Goals
Today has been a nice workout day! I already knew I wanted to go for a run today. So I woke up, had my breakfast, waited two hours and then went for a run. It started out great and then I got cramps for no reason. Same thing happened on Monday so I figured it would turn out pretty much the same way as then – I turned around at the 2 KM mark and the cramps stopped when I was just a couple minutes away from my house. Great. Not today, Satan, not today! So I just kept going. The cramps came and went, then came back and it just kept going like that for a little while, before they finally stopped. Not sure what that’s all about (the cramps I mean), but hopefully I never get them again so I don’t need to figure it out either, hah! Anyway, the run was obviously not one of my better runs.. But on the happy side of it all I actually bothered to check my phone because I started to walk at some point and guess what?! A text from Mari asking me if I wanted to go for a walk with her. Of course I wanted to do that! So I replied that if she could wait 30 minutes I’d love to join the walk. So I hurried home, changed into some less sweaty clothes, then went out for our walk. We walked for almost 2 hours – walking, talking, catching a couple Pokémon. Perfect walk with one of my best friends.

This is a random fact you probably didn’t know: after every single run that isn’t on a treadmill and every walk I track I take a picture of myself, and if I’m with someone they will obviously also be in the picture. It probably sounds a bit weird, but it helps me remember the run/walk a lot better when I look back at my workout history in the app I use – how the weather was, how I was feeling that day, if I was with someone; what we talked about, and a lot of different things I enjoy looking back at. These pictures are not always the most flattering ones, but they are always filled with memories.

The first week of August

..has been exactly what I needed!
August
I still haven’t made a workout plan for the month that I want to follow, I’ve only made a little plan in my head. It’s hard to make a day-to-day workout plan to follow when you live somewhere with weather this unpredictable. I mean, this week the weather report has been so off it has gotten to the point where it’s pissing people off. I’m not saying we’ve only had bad weather, not at all! Most days has started out really nice and sunny then in the afternoon it gets grey and rainy.

Good thing a little unstable weather can’t stop me from having a great run-week! My main thing this week was to get back into a good running routine and hopefully feel like my shape is starting to get back to where it’s supposed to be. All the runs were pretty similar. The old railroad path to the end and back. Every now and then I changed it up a little, added some hill training, but I always did the same old railroad path. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday/today. I wasn’t supposed to take a rest day on Saturday, but the weather was insane in the morning and I had plans the rest of that day.. Five out of seven days isn’t bad though! My shape is starting to get back to what I want aswell. The difference from Monday to today at the same distance is approximately 10 minutes! Which is awesome! I don’t think I could have dreamt of better progress this first week. Hopefully I’ll keep up this when I drag my KMs to double digits again.
August runs
I won’t be making a day-to-day plan to follow this week either, but I will be making a little week plan with daily do’s and week goals that I’ll be posting tomorrow.

When you need motivation

To me running is fun and I have a great time doing it. But some days I’m just not feeling it. There are a lot of reasons as to why you don’t want to work out and need some extra motivation. Most of the time the hardest step is to actually get out the door, then once you get out and start running you no longer understand why you had trouble getting out in the first place. Here is a list of things I could think of that might help you those days when the doorstep mile feels a lot longer than normal.

  1. Buy new shoes or clothes.
    I personally like to do this every now and then. When I buy a new pair of shorts I can’t wait to get out and wear them for a run!
  2. Remember why you run.
    Whether it’s because you’re trying to get the “dream bod”, you’re training for a race, or it’s just your therapy. Remembering why you do this will make it a lot easier to get past that horrid doorstep mile on days you’re just not feeling it.
  3. Running is therapy.
    If I feel like too much is going on around me or if I feel like there’s a lot of chaos in my head I always feel better when I put on my running shoes, get my pulse going, breathe in all the fresh air, and sweat. This is also great if you’re angry/pissed off because then you’ll need to get that anger out somehow, which to me has often resulted in random PBs.
  4. Be happy you CAN run.
    I was never good at thinking this way, but after I had surgery and couldn’t run for a long long time I have started to appreciate it a lot more. Not everyone can think back to a time when they couldn’t run for a longer period because of a surgery or similar stuff, but most people have experienced a cold or something that has forced them to take a few extra days off from running. It’s equally as annoying, so think back to that time and you’ll most likely think “I should get out and run now just in case I’ll get sick in the near future”.
  5. Listen to music.
    Sometimes a run will be easier if you listen to music while running. Make a new playlist on your phone, put on your headphones and go for a run! What I like to do is look for new songs from different countries.
  6. Set goals.
    If you have a goal to, let’s say, run 100 km in a month. Then you have to run to reach that goal. If there’s only 1 day left of the month and you still need 8 km to reach your goal then it’s not that hard to get through that 8 km run even though it might be raining outside, it’s only 8 km after all.
  7. Have a challenge with a friend.
    My mom and I have done this a few months now. We both use an app on our phones to track our runs and with that app you can challenge your friends. Our challenge has been “Who can run the most kms in a month?”. You can make your own challenges, it doesn’t need to be the same as ours, do what suits your own goals and workout plan.
  8. Reward yourself.
    For some this means “If I run today I can eat chocolate tonight” for others it means “If I crush my personal best time on 5K I’ll allow myself to buy new shoes”. Do what motivates you.
  9. Sign up for a race.
    Having something to train for other than your ego is awesome. Knowing I have a marathon to run at the end of November makes it more tolorable to run in the bad late fall weather or spend hours inside on a treadmill. You don’t have to sign up for a marathon, obviously. 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, other. A race is a race and it’s all for fun.

Take a quick look at the photo below – this is what my week has looked like. Not a great run-week for me.. I’ve been so stressed out all week, I need to stop making too many plans at the same time. You see this mirrored in my runs. Being stressed and tired doesn’t  The run I’m the most happy with this week is the short 3.02 km run I did with my mom on Friday. Which is a little weird to me, because normally I’m not happy with a run unless it’s at least ‘so and so’ long. The reason I’m so happy with our short run is because Friday was a day where I really didn’t want to go out and run. I felt so *in lack of a better word* blah. Just blah and gross. I checked the app I’m using to track my runs and decided to take a look at the challenge of the month. My mom and I have been doing this fun little motivation thing for 2 months now; we have a challenge on who can run the most km in a month (the app let you make your own fitness challenges and challenge whoever you want). Anyway, I checked out our challenge page and realized I was only 2 km away from reaching 100 km this month and I automatically needed to reach at least those 100 km. Even though I now knew I was going to run I still struggled to get out the door. We’ve all been there, right? Haha! That’s when I asked my mom if she would help me get through this super short run. She came with me and that’s how I was able to do that run.
This weeks runs
It’s nice to feel happy with a run for other reasons than just the distance or time. But trust and believe, once I’m back from my vacation I’ll be chasing times again and train harder than ever before.

Today it’s only one week left until my dad and I are going to New York again. I am so excited! It’s my favorite place on earth, it’s a place that calms me and makes me happy. New York inspires me. I love it so much! To me traveling makes it easier to organize my thoughts and forget about stupid and stressful things that doesn’t really matter. It’s almost like a cleanse. Now I’m rambling, haha! I hope everyone has had a great week! Good night.

Warm weather, Mini meal prep & Bare belly run

We’re already 2 weeks and 2 days into the month of May and let me tell you; it’s been a good month! A great month, really. At the end of April we had some days where it would randomly snow and I didn’t really think summer would be here for a long long time. Boy was I wrong! Once it was May summer arrived. We’ve had multiple days with around 30 degrees (86 degrees fahrenheit), and so much sun! Which of course means I’ve been running as much as I’ve been able to! I was sick a few days, but I came back even stronger.

Yesterday was a perfect day! Before I went out for my run I decided to do a quick meal prep for the week.
Mini meal prep
Nothing major. I just wanted to get the basics done so I made 2 boxes with french beans and whole grain rice, and 2 boxes of french beans and whole grain fusilli pasta. I’ll make the tofu chicken or whatever I want to have with it the same day as I’m eating it, I just wanted to have most of the meal ready because I’ve been so bored with cooking lately and I personally think meal prepping can help you with staying healthy even when you’re bored and lack motivation.

After my mini meal prep I went out for a nice little run in the sun.
Norway in May
It was great! I even challenged myself a little and ran with a bare belly! I have never ever done that before, and at this moment in time I don’t feel extremely happy with my belly or anything so it’s not like I have amazing abs I want to show off, haha. I wore a tank top but I stuck it up under the edges of my sports bra so that it was almost like just wearing a sports bra, but having the option of covering up if I started to feel uncomfortable. I did use my cover up solution a couple times, but all in all I am proud of myself for how much of the run I did with a bare belly. Why is this so important to me? Well, I am one of those people who can travel halfway around the world to a beach where I know no one and I’ll probably never see any of the people there ever again in my life – yet I won’t feel okay wearing a bikini or shorts because I’m worried these random people will think “ew, she looks gross”. Some people will say this is stupid, some people will know exactly what I mean. Anyway, I feel like if I’m able to run with shorts and a sports bra here – where I actually risk running into people I know, then it’ll be easier and easier to feel confident and be happy in my own skin no matter what I wear and how my body looks that day. Maybe it will also motivate me to do more ab workouts, haha?!

After my run I enjoyed a bowl full of delicious strawberries and a banana. Yum! Strawberries are probably my favorite thing to eat in the whole world!

So happy with my progress!

Hello and happy Friday! This week has been amazing! Not only have my eating been on point, but I’ve also been able to go for a run every single day and I’ve had so much progress with my running that it’s almost unbelieveable to me. Even though nothing is a 100% perfect yet, I am still so happy with how things are going! Work, run, work, run, work. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s spring or if it’s because I finally get to run again and I’m eating healthy, but my mood has finally started to improve so much. I love it!

I am in a good place, sort of, and I have accepted that it will take me some time to get back to where I used to be when it comes to my running times. All I can do is work, work, work, then before we know it I’ll be smashing my distances and PR’s again! I’m already excited, haha. On Monday I went for a nice little 6 km run. I was really happy that I finally was able to get all the kms in less than 8 minutes. I had to walk a lot, but at least I still managed to get them all under 8 – which was the goal. On Tuesday I went for a 7 km run. 4 of the kms in 7-something minutes, 3 in 6-something. That’s progress again! I still had to walk a lot – and I’m pretty sure it will take some time before I can get through a whole run without any walks again, but as long as I’m getting faster again I don’t mind it too much. I haven’t gotten through a whole kilometer without having to walk yet. It’s a work in progress.

On Wednesday I went for the same 7 km run. And guess what?! I was able to run the two first kilometers without having to walk! Haha, the smallest things make me proud and happy now, and that’s honestly pretty refreshing and motivating. The rest was again a mix of running and walking, but at least I did it with a little more tempo! As you can see all the km’s except for 1 was in less than 7 minutes. Which I’m really happy with, let’s facd it: last week I struggled to get through a km in less than 8 minutes. Then there’s Thursday! Yesterday’s run was the best one yet, the first time this week I’ve felt like it’s actually been a real run almost, haha! The first 3.5 km I didn’t have to walk at all! I was able to push myself a little more – get out of my own head and just keep going whenever my brain went “you NEED to walk now, WALK!“. I only walked a little, then I started running again. The next time I walked was only because I had to take a sip of water and I’m still having a little trouble drinking without having it go up my nose (yes, that is a valid excuse for having to walk when you drink, don’t try me!). The next time I walked was the same thing. Yes, I only had to take 3 short walk breaks this time! And only 1 of them was for something other than needing a sip of water. 5 of the kilometers were 6-something minutes, then the last 2 were 5-something. YES! Now that is progress!

Another little thing I want to mention really quickly is that now that I don’t have super long hair my neck doesn’t feel all stiff and sore after my runs. I am so glad I cut my hair, haha! I’m gonna go for a nice little Friday run aswell, but I’m probably going to take it easy and don’t push myself too much, I don’t want to go too crazy too eary on – I’ve done that before and it’s not the smartest thing you can do, haha.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s day everyone!

Everything went okay at the hospital. But I was a little bit annoyed afterwards to be honest because I didn’t really get any new information, other than that I’ll get my tonsils removed. They told me to wait for a letter from them with more information. I waited, then it arrived. And the only thing the letter said (and I’m not joking, it was two lines with this information) was that I was going to get the surgery but I’ll have to wait for yet another letter to know when. Haha, couldn’t get more annoying than that. Oh well, my throat is feeling okay at the moment, so I don’t mind right now. A few days after the hospital things I had an appointment with my dentist to have one of my wisdom teeth taken out, because it was so far back in my jaw that I was having a hard time brushing it well enough so we agreed that I should get it pulled before I would have any issues with it. I was so scared! I have never had a tooth taken out before, and I am already terrified of the dentist so you better believe I was freaking out that morning, haha. What can I say? Uhm.. It was a new experience. It took me a whole week to not feel any more pain from it, and my cheek was so swollen – I looked like a squirrel, haha!

Obviously I didn’t run after I had my wisdom tooth pulled because I was in a lot of pain, so to make time pass I started drawing a little again. And I am obsessed. This is sort of a progress picture of my Michael Jackson drawing. It’s not done yet, and after that last photo of those 8 I still have 3 new pictures that I need to put into this “progress picture” thing, but here is a little something something to show you guys what I do. I love to keep record of the progress of a drawing, it’s so much fun to see where you started and all the little changes you’ve done to get to where you’re at in the end. I love it.

On Friday I went for my first run after 3 weeks of nothing but a couple walks. It felt amazing! And now I know I’m perfectly fine to start running again. So on Saturday I ran again. Both the runs were really short, but it’s a great start. I am really looking forward to spring now, it’s okay to run on the treadmill every now and then, but Lord how I miss running outside. But until then; I am extremely happy that I have my own treadmill and I am going to use it a lot! Tomorrow I’m getting back into a good and strict routine with my workouts and my diet. I am feeling so motivated and happy now, and I can’t wait to share every single moment with you!

Firenze Marathon, London, Christmas, & Happy New Year!

Hello, and Happy New Year!
December was full of stuff I wanted to write about, but I’ve had total writer’s block so I didn’t.. It’s my favorite month; first it’s my birthday and then it’s Chritsmas! How can you not love that, right?! And this December I’ve done a lot more fun stuff than just eat like a pig and buy presents. So I figured I could just write a quick recap on how my end of 2015 was and what I did.

On Friday November 27th my mom and I went to Florence, Italy. As you might know we were going there to run our 2nd full marathon. The marathon wasn’t before Sunday so we spent the first days just walking around looking at things, shopping, eating, and just enjoying our little vacation. This year I was smart enough to eat my beloved gelato before the marathon, haha! The 28th was my brother’s birthday, and the marathon was the 29th. I’m saving the marathon talk for the recap, so stay tuned for that! We flew back to Norway on the 30th, and on December 1st I turned 23, so happy birthday to me!

Monday December 7th I went to London with my friend Julia and her 4-year-old son, Theodor. Our excuse to go was to visit our friend Michelle who is going to school there (but we all know the main reason was selfishly to see the Christmas streets and shop for presents, haha). We met Michelle a couple times, spent a lot of time at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park because Theodor loved it, shopped for Christmas presents, and simply enjoyed being in London. I hadn’t been there in years, and I had totally forgotten how much I love England. Going to a big city with a 4-year-old is not the easiest thing in the world, but we still had a great time and we’re planning to take this trip next Christmas aswell. I need to buy more fun Christmas sweaters next time we’re there!

When we got back from London we were only 1 and a half week away from Christmas. It kind of made me sad. Christmas is my favorite holiday, and I felt like I hadn’t gotten to enjoy the time running up to it as much as I’d like to. But I made the best of it. From the time we came back to Norway and till Christmas I finally started running a little again, worked a lot, listened to Christmas songs 24/7, finished buying and wrapping all the Christmas presents (one of my favorite things to do!), baked gingerbread cookies with my dad and my brother, decorated my room (the tree in the picture is my tiny bedroom tree, how cute is that?!), we decorated the big tree and the rest of the house, and all that fun stuff. I abolutely love this time of the year! I had an amazing Christmas with my family. My mom and I even went for a run outside in the day on Christmas Eve.

After Christmas it was time to really get back into the running game again. It’s gotten a lot colder outside now, so we’ve had to run on the treadmill. Not as fun, but I’ll get used to it soon. The day of New Years Eve I was feeling so nauseous so the run was a really light short one, but it was still a good way to wave goodbye to 2015. New Years Eve was also my last day of bad eating, so hopefully my stomach and body will feel a lot better in no time! On January 1st we went to the gym again and ran on the treadmill. There’s no better way to start the year! Unless you’re able to run outside of course, haha.

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever you celebrate! I also hope you all ate so much that you layed flat out on the sofa like a stranded whale, just so that I wasn’t the only one. And that you had a great New Years Eve, and that 2016 started out just the way you wanted!

13 days left until the Marathon

The Marathon is less than 2 weeks away now, and I am getting so excited! (13 days left until the marathon & 15 days left until my birthday!) Last time I posted I wrote about how my time improved 8 minutes in 2 days. Well, the next run we had again after that I shaved another 8 minutes off of my time on that same route and distance! So I guess 8 is the magical number this month (Sesame Street flashbacks, haha!).

Most my runs lately has been with my mom. We are running the marathon together, so it’s nice to train together so that we know how to run and all that stuff. I’m one of those people who tend to start running way too fast at the beginning of the run and not being able to hold a steady pace throughout the whole run, but when I run with my mom she tells me to slow down if I push the pace too much and makes me hold a steady pace. She’s also been “teaching” me how to eat these little energy things while we’re running and I’m finally starting to feel like I’ve got the hang of it now. Normally drinking or eating something while I run makes me throw up a little, which is not really all that fun – especially not during a super long distance like a marathon, haha.

This Wednesday I’m going to get a massage again. The backstory to this: My mom has been getting massages and needles for her shoulder for a while (my mom and one of her friends was in a little bike accident last summer which has left her with a messed up shoulder) and she thought it might help me to try it too.
I tense up a lot when I run because I don’t breathe very well and when I have too much trouble getting air down into my lungs my neck and upper back area really hurts. This normally starts out with sharp pain around my shoulder blade and above my collar bones 2-3 km into my runs. After my second appointment (Thursday, November 5th) the pain I normally feel in that area after only 2-3 km wasn’t there. And it didn’t come after 5 km, not after 10 km, not after 12 km, and so on. I swear, this was my first run ever in my 2 years of running that has been completely pain free! I’ve felt it a little on my last 2 runs now, but not even close to what I was used to. So this Wednesday I’ll have my third appointment, and hopefully that will keep the pain away for the race. Also, the massage guy is super nice – apperantly he used to be a personal trainer at the gym I work at, and he has written a book about how to start working out if you don’t like working out (or something like that. Don’t worry, once it’s out I’ll read it and update you, haha) that will be out in January, so that’s pretty cool!

From now till Friday the 27th (that’s the day we’re going to Italy, the marathon is on Sunday 29th) I’ll be making sure I put a lot of focus on eating healthy, drinking enough water and make sure my sleep pattern is on point. And obviously make sure I don’t get sick again!

Yesterday I went on a super nice Sunday run with my dad. My tonsils were really swollen and it was very cold outside so I was a little worried that it wouldn’t be a good run, but it was actually a really good one. Oh, and guess what? Today it’s snowing here! The first snow of the season. I was hoping the snow wouldn’t get here before next week, but now that it’s here I guess I’ll be doing some treadmill runs these last days before the marathon.
