Weekend Recap: Trail run, Bruised knee & Waffles

Where do I even begin? Do you ever have those days that you think will be really great and then all these random little things happen that just completely ruins everything? These last couple of days has been a mixture of good, bad, perfect and disasterous. I’m not going to go too deep into all of this, but here is the main story from the weekend and just a few random things.

Saturday would have been my Grandmother’s 75th birthday. I miss her dearly, and everything that reminds me she’s not here anymore makes me sad.. But I was determined to make this Satuday a great day anyway, a day to celebrate life and just do things that make me happy. I started the day with a 3 hour shift at work – and it was a pretty good day at work too, when I was done I went home and relaxed for a few minutes before I got ready and went out for a run. The weather couldn’t have been much better; the sun was shining, it was quite warm, and there wasn’t a single cloud in the sky. Perfect!

I started my run at the old railroad behind our house, which I almost always do when I run when I’m at home. I didn’t really have a plan on where I wanted to run, but when I got close to the end of the railroad I decided to try this little path up the hills into the woods. I had never taken that path before, so I wasn’t sure where I would end up, but it didn’t really matter, new roads are always exciting. I never really do much trail running so this would just be for fun and to see if the snow had melted away deeper in the woods too. After a while I reached Skapertjern, which is this huge pond in the woods. It was still covered in ice and there was still quite a bit of snow around the pond, but other than that there wasn’t really much snow left in the woods. Which is great, because I’ve been wanting to do more running in the woods and now I can finally give it a real try. I continued my run on one of my good old favorite paths there and began on the journey back down from the pond. Which means me, who is no trail runner, is running down some very steep hills with a lot of big rocks peeking up from everywhere. Scary. All the way down I kept saying to myself “don’t fall now, don’t fall now, don’t you dare falling!”. I was so releaved when I got to the bottom of the last rock filled hill. I said “Thank you GOD for not letting me fall!” and then I tripped. Wish I would have listened to that Kesha song Timber right then, haha. Anyway, I faceplanted like a tree. My knees, my right arm and my hipbones hurt like hell, but the worst pain came from my left knee. I freaked out for a moment because I though my knee was badly injured, then I got really sad because Berlin half marathon was only 2 weeks and 1 day away and now I probably wouldn’t be able to run, then I got really mad at myself because I had been so stupid to try running in the woods so close to Berlin half. I tried walking and I thought I was going to throw up from the pain, so I sat down again and just waited for it to get a little better. And it did, so I started walking back home. The knee got a lot better during the walk, so I tried running easy the last km. Painful, but nothing extreme, so I knew it would get better in a few days.

It was a lot more painful than it looks on these photos. The Saturday one was from right after I got home, and the Sunday one was from Sunday afternoon. After I took the first picture the knee swelled up even more which made it hard to bend it and the part with the bruise looked like a second knee haha. By Sunday afternoon the swelling was a lot less extreme, and it wasn’t hard to bend it anymore.

Even though Saturday’s run ended kind of bad it was still a lovely run before I fell. I even saw some creepy old buildings randomly here and there in the woods which I’ve never seen before! I have lived here my whole life and I’ve spent a lot of time walking around in these woods, so seeing things I never knew was there is so weird. I love when stuff like that happens, I know I’ll have to explore these old buildings more one day. Hopefully soon. Later the same day I went to my friend Julia and watched “Orphan” – if you haven’t seen it then I strongly recommend it! It’s so creepy, but at the same time amazing.

On Sunday I prepped all my meals for Monday to Friday. I have a new waffle iron and I was super excited to try it. Haha, yes, that’s just the kind of person I am. I think square waffles are so much cooler than my boring old heart waffles. Even though I think those are really cute too. I’m obsessed with protein waffles!
I guess no one really cares, but I’ll explain why it has taken me so long to write this post. I need a new computer! The one I use now is the one I bought when I was 14 years old, I’ve had 2 between then and now, but both those two died.. Why does old computers live so much longer than the new ones? The only problem with this one is that it doesn’t always let me work on it. It will randomly just freeze when I open a website and the only thing that helps is turning it off and not use it for a while. Hopefully next month I’ll have a new computer so I can write posts about things the day it happens, haha.

I went for a run yesterday, and I didn’t feel any pain from the knee so I don’t think I’ll have any problems during Berlin half marathon. Only 11 days left now! I’m so excited!

    I don’t know, you said that your knee felt worse than it looked–it looked pretty bad to me!! I am glad it is recovering!
    That rail trail looks so peaceful–a great place to run!

    I really like your waffle pic, looks DELICIOUS! Is that syrup on top? It’s so tan and thick. (that’s what she said, hah).

    I know exactly how you feel about your grandma – My Mema’s birthday is next week and I hate that she is no longer here to celebrate!!

  5. You are definitely brave for going it alone on a new trail. I love exploring new trails, but definitely do my research before I head out on my own. It looks like a beautiful trail – green and peaceful! How long did you follow it for?

    You seriously took quite the spill. Battle wounds from trail running are inevitable. I’m glad that it’s not too serious, but I can understand how it could be painful.

    Your food pictures lately have been beautiful. I want to invite you over to cook for me! I can’t remember the last time I had a waffle, but maybe I should consider buying a waffle maker. ☺

    • I love new trails πŸ™‚ That part of the trail is the one that is right behind our house (it’s the old railroad). Followed it for around 3 km, then went over to a smaller trail into the woods on the side.
      I hope I never fall while trail running again, haha. I guess that is a bit much to ask for, but I really don’t like falling – pain is not my style haha.

  6. Your poor knees πŸ™ I am glad you recovered quickly. I have done that before on a trail and got nervous, but the next day I was much improved. It would really suck if the fall really screwed up your race.
    The square waffle is cool πŸ™‚ I have a little tiny waffle maker that makes such a huge mess I just make pancakes lol I still haven’t found any protein waffles here. Are buying a certain brand or adding powder proteins to your mix?
    It’s hard to miss loved ones. Live well, she would want you to be happy above all πŸ™‚

    • Thank God it wasn’t too serious. It gave me a huge scare though haha, never ever doing trail running before a race ever again! πŸ™‚
      Haha πŸ˜€ Yes, I use Protein Butter Milk Pancake mix from Proteinfabrikken (2 scoops of powder, add 2,5 dl water, then shake and bake). So good πŸ˜€ You can see how the container looks here.
